Cinctures

Y-Judes Vestments has a full range of cinctures and girdles available in all styles and various colours, with both knotted and tassled ends available.

In the Catholic Church, the cincture is a long (usually 12ft) rope-like cord with tassled or knotted ends tied around the waist outside the alb. The colour may be white, or may vary according to the colour of the liturgical season. A Bishop’s cincture is made of intertwining gold and green threads while a Cardinal’s has red and gold.

In the Anglican, Methodist and Lutheran churches, as well as some Protestant churches the cincture is known as a girdle, the term “cincture” referring to a broad sash worn over a cassock above the waist.

Amices

An amice is a liturgical vestment generally made from white linen or poly/cotton. It is secured around the shoulders of the priest with two (ribbon like) attachments.

Many priests choose to wear the amice when the alb does not cover the priest’s ordinary clothing or for other traditional reasons, but they are also useful in protecting other vestments from perspiration damage and wear.

Surplices and Cottas

The surplice or cotta (depending on the denomination and/or length) is a type of tunic usually made from lightweight poly/cotton, with wide square sleeves and of a length that reaches either the knees or the ankles. They can feature lace or embroidered decoration or can be plainly hemmed. The decoration, if used, should be placed approx. 3 inches above the edge of the hem and/or sleeves and they are generally worn over a cassock.

Y-Judes Vestments are happy to make them in any style you require with your choice of decorative lace or plain and either gathered or pleated onto a square yoke.
